The Kingdom of Drahl

Fledgling Monarchy

A newfound kingdom reliant on its dragon allies to the east, founded in the former heart of the Eternal Empire of the Giants.

Imports: Reagents, metal goods, machines, firearms

Exports: Luxury goods, food, lumber, salt

Prominent Cities

  • Iria, the captial city. Formerly the capital of the Empire, its grandiose architecture is covered in small adjustments and careful stonework to make it suitable for humanoids instead of giantfolk.
  • Loxlan, the research hub. The core of the old Empire's research into the very nature of magic, this city exists entirely to support the Loxlan Archives, which contain row upon row of massive books on strange spells and dangerous rituals.

Governance and Society

Drahl is a very new nation, and is currently pivoting itself away from its roots as a violent revolution and into the more tedious task of governance. King Marus Drahl, the successor to the now-dead King Jorian Drahl, is facing increasing pressure to establish legal and administrative systems that weren’t necessary immediately following the war against the Eternal Empire.

In most places, the kingdom is still disorganized. Laws are enforced by local militias that take little interest in the changes enacted in the capital city of Iria, though in recent years this informal system has been reinforced with traveling judges who rule on more important matters and keep the militias up to date on any changes. The administration beneath the monarchy is prone to disorder. It has yet to have any serious cases of corruption, but most agree that it’s only a matter of time before one arises.

King Marus also listens closely to his draconic advisor, the ancient red dragon known as the Crumbling Ember Kharathustrisak. The Crumbling Ember supported the Drahlan war, using his connections with the other dragons local to the area to provide much-needed aid to the embattled humanoid forces of the rebellion. However, he secretly has designs on being a king behind the throne and influencing the events of the mortal nations. This ambition has been heightened by the recent death of the ancient dragon that once ruled Gloranith.

In recent years, Drahl is perhaps best known for its attempts to enforce strict laws over its people, under the orders of court mage Yuria Pherin. These efforts backfired when a group of prisoners sent to the dreaded Isle of Khandra managed to escape, uncover Yuria’s plot to seize power from the Primordial Sea, and seal off a gateway to another plane. In the aftermath of these events, laws in Drahl have been relaxed somewhat.

Drahlans tend to value personal freedom, but they have a nationalistic streak due to the military origins of their nation. Magical research is also a focus for the kingdom–the archives of the Eternal Empire of the Giants have been sealed off from all “small folk,” and scholars are eager to uncover what the giants have learned.

Common Backgrounds

Martial backgrounds like Warrior, Scout, and Field Medic make sense for a nation that was only recently established after a long and ruinous war. Depending on your character’s ancestry, you might have lived through the conflict, which occurred about a century ago. Makeshift legal backgrounds like Wandering Judge and Investigator also make sense, as it was only one year ago that a more formalized legal system was established in Drahl.

Scholars of magic also flock to Drahl for research in the archives of Loxlan. Some study the magic of the Eternal Empire, while others want to record the giants’ history or see what insights their researchers had in eras past.

Unique Background

Loxlan Archivist

You studied magic in many forms in one of the old giantish archives of Loxlan, learning secrets not meant for humanoid eyes. Whether due to the cutthroat politics of the archives or simply from discovering something forbidden within the dusty halls, you were forced to leave the archives eventually, but your magical knowledge will be of use to any adventuring party. You might have joined a group like the Reclaimers to perform similar research in the field, far from the Archives.

Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Intelligence or Wisdom, and the other is a free ability boost. You’re trained in your choice of either the Arcana skill or the Occultism skill. You’re also trained in the Academia Lore skill. You gain the Recognize Spell skill feat for whichever skill you chose.
