Governance and Society

While the former giantish colonies do have cultural ties to the Eternal Empire, their cultures and governments are slowly diverging as the Empire fades into memory. The majority of the former colonies are run by one Overseer who enacts laws and enforces them with impunity. Some Overseers have a council of advisors, but they retain the final say on any laws.

Giantish Imperial culture stratifies society into four tiers: visionaries, warriors, laborers, and non-Giants. Visionaries are able to become an Overseer, lead armies, and take important positions in government. Warriors are restricted to martial leadership and work, but are given more luxury and freedom as long as they remain loyal soldiers.

Laborers are the remainder of the giantish workforce: those who keep the buildings from falling apart, work the fields, ply trades, and the like. Merchants, priests, and other such folk also fall into this broad category.

The lowest of their society are non-Giants. Giants who perform particularly egregious crimes can be relegated to this rank, and all non-Giant humanoids are automatically part of this tier. They are only allowed to perform menial labor, to serve giants, to act as a vanguard for the army, or to fight in the arenas. In some cases, non-Giant humanoids can be honored as a Titan Champion, giving them equal status to a Laborer giant.

Giantish society is in a state of flux. The once-great Empire stands in ruin, and their imperial culture is slowly changing as the former colonies diverge. Some Overseers resent the memory of the Empire and prefer to forge their own path, while others have taken to a desperate worship of the Eternal Emperor and the old Giantish gods. They hope that the Emperor might return someday to reclaim his Eternal Empire.

Unrest is high in the former colonies. Non-giants outnumber the giants almost two to one, and the Kingdom of Drahl has sent spies and agents to the colonies in recent years with the hope of overturning the giants and creating cooperative allies in a single stroke. The Age of Upheaval is over, but war brews just under the surface of these former Imperial holdings.

Common Backgrounds

Due to the difference in social status between giants and non-giants, backgrounds like servant, cook, and laborer would be common for adventurers from the former colonies. If the adventure isn’t set in the colonies, then Insurgent or Refugee might also make sense, as would Criminal and other backgrounds that lie outside of the law.

For a martial character, Gladiator would also be a common background, though Titan Champion might make more sense if you were particularly successful as a gladiator.

Unique Background

Titan Champion [Uncommon]

Through service, deed, or pure luck, you were made a Giant in the eyes of the law. Typically, this requires military service, though it could also be related to gladiatorial prowess. A title like this used to be reserved for those who performed a great service for the Eternal Empire. This is no longer the case, as there’s no imperial authority to grant such a title. Regardless, your title makes you a respected individual in giantish society.

Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Strength or Dexterity, and the other is a free ability boost. You gain the Athletics skill and the Eternal Empire Lore skill. You also gain the Titan Wrestler skill feat.
